"TURN OFF, TUNE ON" TOUR

Over the past year, 1.9 million U.S. adolescents experienced severe social anxiety or depression. Nearly 30,000 students are staying home from school every single day in the United States due to these mental struggles. As a result of “generation like” the number of adolescents with a mental disorder in the United States has continuously risen alongside the popularity of social media. Social media has dramatically changed the way that we socialize, communicate, and spend free time on a daily basis. Because the way that we interact with one another has dramatically changed, adolescents are missing out on critical social skill development. This replacement of vocally communicating with one another can lead to harsh judgements, miscommunication, cyberbullying, and harmful self image distortion. The world has seemingly accepted that social media is now part of our culture and therefore minimal efforts have been made to regulate how much time adolescents are spending connected. It is time to put this epidemic to rest.
'Turn Off, Tune On.’ is a national school assembly tour presented by 'Birds in the Boneyard' to raise the awareness of this ever-growing issue; and how to put and end to it. Doctoral research insists that listening to music and educational podcasts can be incredibly beneficial for mental health. The benefits of listening to music and educational podcasts include: relief of stress, relief of social anxiety, improvement of sleep quality, improvement of cognitive performance, relief of depression symptoms, regulation of eating habits, and improvement of self image. ‘Turn Off Tune On’ encourages students to “turn off” social media news feeds, and “tune on” music and educational podcasts as a way to replace some of the time they spend on social media each day.
The first portion of the assembly is spent educating the students of the negative impact that spending too much time on social media can have upon mental health in adolescents. After these statistics and facts have been discussed, the health benefits of listening to music and podcasts (backed by research) is then presented to the students. ‘Birds in the Boneyard’ will encourage students to replace some of the time they are mindlessly spending on social media with listening to music and educational podcasts. The assembly then concludes with a CLEAN, four song live performance by Birds in the Boneyard. The high energy of 'Turn Off, Tune On' truly gets the informative message of this program across to students in the most interactive and efficient way possible. BOOK YOUR SCHOOL TODAY!
